One Monthly Goal: June 2024

My May goal was to finish the green scrap quilt I pieced for the RSC. I made a lot of progress --it is about half-quilted--but did not finish it. It is a present for my sister, but I didn't end up getting to see her last month (she lives 5 hours away). I hope to visit her in July, so that is my new deadline for that project.

My goal for June is to quilt a pink and green scrap quilt that Lisa and I made for a friend of ours who is battling cancer. I am stippling it and have already made a good start, so I should be able to get it done pretty quickly.

One Monthly Goal: May 2024

Green scrap quilt in progress
My March goal was to machine quilt a cheater for the dog, which I  completed. By the time I was done my swirl meanders were looking pretty good. I started quilting a top with the same pattern for my Guild's charity project and my swirl meander continues to improve. I didn't set an April goal--the whole month somehow got away from me.

In May I want to finish the green scrap quilt I pieced for the RSC. I need to finish the quilting (which I started but haven't gotten far with) and then bind it. It is a present for my sister and her birthday is at the end of the month.

One Monthly Goal: March 2024

Cheater panel ready to quilt
My February goal was to machine quilt the baby quilt my friend made which I completed. I was very pleased with how it came out and she is nearly done handsewing the binding which she made from scraps of the fabrics used in the pinwheel blocks. It is adorable!

In March I want to quilt the cheater panel I basted to be a dog quilt. I am going to use a swirl pattern that I want to practice before I use it to quilt one of the charity quilts I am finishing for my Guild. This is the quilt I thought I would do feathers on, but after reading a book about feathers I decided this isn't a good top for them. I do plan to work through the feather quilting exercises in the book sometime soon.

One Monthly Goal: February 2024

Baby Quilt by A.J.
January's goal was to finish the leaf appliques on my tropical quilt. That didn't get done, but I made significant progress: out of 38 I finished 8 leaves, traced, fused, and cut out another 16 and got more fusible so I can do the rest.

My goal for February is to machine quilt the baby quilt my friend made. It is basted and ready to go and I have selected threads for the top and the back. I want to have it quilted, pressed, and trimmed by the end of the month at the latest.

One Monthly Goal: January 2024

A finished set of leaves
This month's goal is to finish the leaf appliques on my tropical quilt. I need to:

  • trace 38 leaves onto fusible web and cut them out (10 sets of 3 + 4 pairs)
  • fuse 38 leaves onto the fabric and cut them out
  • machine applique all 38 leaves in place on the edges of the quilt top
I am going on a quilt retreat at the end of the month and can do the actual applique at retreat if I get everything prepped ahead of time. I am using a variegated thread for the applique and hopefully I have enough of it to finish all the leaves.

OMG October Finish

My #onemonthlygoal for October was to finish my blue string quilt which I did. This was finish #5/7 for my by-the-end of 2021 finishing goals. This was string-pieced on muslin foundations and came entirely from my scrap collection. It was originally going to be just blues with a little black and purple but I didn't think it had enough visual interest so I added the red squares to some of the blocks. A friend who saw it said it reminded her of Gee's Bend quilts which I didn't think about when I did it, but I think that was buried in my brain somewhere because this quilt is very reminiscent of some of those quilts.

Blue String Quilt 2021

I started quilting this when I was at Quilt Retreat with my guild and one of my fellow guild members (a fabulous long-arm quilter) helped me decide on a quilting pattern. She suggested stars which I hadn't really done before, but they were pretty easy to do and they turned out really well on this quilt.

OMG October

Quilting in progress, Sept. 2021
My #onemonthlygoal for October (which ties into my goal of finishing 7 in-progress quilts) is to finish my blue string quilt. I started quilting it at my guild retreat in September and finished about 2/3 of it. I need to finish quilting it, then get it bound.

OMG July

My #onemonthlygoal for June was to finish the quilting on my house quilt. I did not accomplish that, but I did make progress. I am recycling last month's goal and setting my #onemonthlygoal for July to finish the quilting on this project.

OMG May Finish

Finished top
My #onemonthlygoal for this month was to finish the top of the blue string quilt I started back in February.  I completed the top and am pleased with how it came out. The next step is to find backing fabric for it.

OMG May

String blocks begun
My #onemonthlygoal for this month is to finish the top of the blue string quilt I started back in February.  I haven't really sewed much since January, but I'm going to try to get back on track with it.

This quilt will be a donation to my Guild's charity quilt project when it is finished. It will be 42 string-pieced blocks (set 6x7) in blues with some of the squares having a burgundy frame in the middle of the square to make it more interesting looking. The strings are all from my scraps and are mostly dark blues with a few lighter blues and some blacks and dark purples mixed in. I finished 8 of the blocks previously and have the centers of the remaining blocks pieced and strings pressed and ready to use for the rest. I got going on this project again while listening to the "Coal Wars" episodes of the American History Tellers podcast, so I might call this the "Coal Quilt."

In addition to OMG I am also linking this to Oh Scrap!

I did not get the Light/bright Stars Quilt quilted (my February OMG) but I did make some progress on it.

OMG February

Basted, some quilting begun
My #onemonthlygoal for this month is to finish machine quilting my Light/bright Stars Quilt. I have done swirls in all the light four-patches, with a pastel variegated thread, and began doing continuous curves in the pink/purple star blocks using a variegated purple. I have an orange variegated thread planned for the green/orange stars. After all the star blocks are quilted there will be another pass to fill in the white corner squares with white thread quilting. Then something in the border.

This is an ambitious goal as it is a lot of quilting in a short month AND I just started piecing a string-block quilt which I am much more excited about than I am about finishing this very old UFO.

OMG January Finish

My finished top
My #onemonthlygoal this month was to finish all 40 blocks for my Lavender Geese Quilt. I not only did that, I completed the top and got the backing pieced.

I got much of this quilt done because I had an audiobook going that was really fun and I wanted to know what would happen next so I kept sewing because I wanted to keep listening.

The geese in this quilt are made with a stitch and flip method and I didn't trim out the underneath bits so it is pretty heavy. The backing is a cute flannel toile and I'm thinking I might just quilt it without any batting since it is going to be a summer quilt anyway. I've never done that before though so if you have advice about this plan please leave a comment.

Part of One Monthly Goal is a prize giveaway and one of the prizes this month is an EPP starter kit. I was contemplating trying out EPP so I might need to buy this for myself in the very likely event that I don't win the random drawing.

OMG January

Lavender Geese, 1/2/2021
I am not setting any sewing goals or signing up for any year-long challenges in 2021, but I am going to try to set (and meet) a one-monthly-goal  along with Elm Street Quilts each month this year.

My #onemonthlygoal for January is to finish all 40 blocks for my Lavender Geese quilt. This will be a lap quilt which I plan to use as a throw in my bedroom during the spring and summer. I have this exact same quilt pattern made up from a coffee-themed jelly roll which I like a lot and I decided I wanted another one in a lighter palette for the warmer months. The pattern is called "High Flying Geese" and is from Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts by Pam & Nicky Lintott. I followed the pattern for the first one except that I used a slightly different border. I plan to do the same thing this time. All the pieces are cut, some of the geese units are assembled, and 8 blocks have been made so far.

OMG December Finish

My #onemonthlygoal for December was to finish quilting a quilt made by one of my bee-mates.  I finished the quilting and she picked it up before Christmas.

All That Glitters - quilting done

OMG December

My #onemonthlygoal for December is to quilt this beautiful quilt made by a friend in my bee. It is the All-that-Glitters quilt from Nickle quilts and she did it in batiks. She asked me to quilt it for her and we decided on a basic stipple in a neutral thread. I started it over the weekend and hope to have the quilting finished before the end of the month.

OMG November Finish

Pinwheel Quilt - Done!
My #onemonthlygoal for November was to finish this pinwheel quilt my sister is gifting to a friend. It is quilted and bound and went in the mail yesterday.
The basic pattern came from a recent issue of American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine. I didn't like the border on the quilt in the magazine though so I used squares of some of the same scraps I made the pinwheels from and the white background fabric and created a sort of woven ribbon border. I like how it turned out.

OMG November

My #onemonthlygoal for November is to finish piecing the top of the pinwheel baby quilt I am making for a friend of my sister's. All 61 pinwheels are pieced and the rows are assembled so I need to put the rows together and figure out a border. I also need to find backing. All the pinwheels are from my scrap baskets and there are only a handful of duplicates. Linking up with Oh Scrap! as well as OMG.

OMG October Finish

My #onemonthlygoal this month was to finish one of the scrappy baby quilts I had in progress. Mission accomplished! I used one of the machine quilting designs that I tried out earlier in the fall and was happy with how it came out. I should have made my lines farther apart though because this took way longer than it should have and didn't really need quite so much quilting. I will know better next time. This quilt was made totally from my stash, mostly scraps, so I am linking it up with Oh Scrap!

Baby quilt finished and ready to donate

OMG October

Quilting was begun
My #onemonthlygoal for October is to finish one of my scrappy baby quilts. I began quilting this one (full picture is here) last weekend but have a ways to go yet. I want to finish quilting it and get it bound. I have a cute green binding all made and ready to go.

The UFO challenge for last month (a red knit cardigan/jacket) is exactly where it was at the start of the month. This month's project is #6 which is my Light/Bright Stars Quilt. When I made my UFO list it was ready to pin baste. That has been done and now it is ready to quilt. I hope to get the quilting on that at least started this month. Any progress will be better than I did last month!

OMG September Finish

All quilted!
My #onemonthlygoal for September was to finish quilting my purple scrappy Irish chain quilt which I did. It did it in 3 sections which makes it easier to deal with on my sewing machine, but means there is extra binding to sew. I finished the quilting and the binding strips down the back. It is trimmed and ready to put the binding around the edges.

Since this quilt was made entirely from scraps I am linking up with Oh Scrap!
