Western 9-Patch

This is the last of my A Quilted Gift finishes for this week.

This is a simple sashed 9-patch with a cowboy border. There was enough of these fabrics in the donation bins to make 3 of this quilt, with more left over. I put one together and made up kits for two more. The kits will make up quilts identical to this one, but with different backing fabrics. I don't think I'm going to quilt this one, I'm going to hand it in and let another Guild member do the quilting. I included the strips for binding to match the red bandanna-print sashing in each kit and made some for my finished top as well.

Continuing the finishes of the quilts I have been working on creating for my guild's charity quilt project -- A Quilted Gift. 

The bin of Western fabric included 4 of the same panel featuring cowboy images. There were 11 different pictures in a variety of sizes. 

I worked out the math, added an extra side unit to make the quilt more balanced and came up with this design. I plan to quilt this top before turning it in for distribution. I also made up kits with the remaining 3 panels including the needed fabrics (the background and accent fabrics vary) and directions to recreate this quilt. The kits will be available at the next AQG meeting.

Scrappy Eagle Quilt

I have a bunch of finishes to share this week. I have been working on creating quilts from a big bin of Western-themed fabric for my guild's charity quilt project -- A Quilted Gift. 

The fabric with the eagles that I used for center panels in this Scrappy quilt was one big piece with a very large repeat so I had to cut the feature squares 9.5" which made a big quilt. I usually put 3 rounds of scraps around each image when I make this design, but this time I stopped at 2 rounds so the quilt wouldn't be outrageously large. 

 

Friday Finish

Seaside Patchwork 

 This quilt is another variation on the design I used for the horse-panel top. It is closer to the pattern in the book. It includes 220 squares cut at 2"--all of which came from my box of scrap squares.

I quilted this with a wave pattern in the patchwork and then a loop-the-loop in variegated blue in the seaside print sections. I had a little bit of striped binding left from a previous project and I used it a long the top because it was the perfect colors for this quilt. 

Overall I like this design, but next time I may play around a bit with the proportions of panel to patchwork. 

Release the Kraken!

Background

 I had fun creating my mythical creature-inspired quilt for Project Quilting. To start off I created a background for my kraken by pulling blues from my scrap bins to string piece a panel.

Then I did a paper mock-up to figure out the shape and distribution of the tentacles. 

After that I started pulling scraps and tracing pieces onto fusible for the applique. After I got everything fused I zig-zag stitched around each piece and then put batting pieces behind each of the tentacles (to give them extra proof) and outlined each one with a row of stitching. After trimming away the excess batting I layered the top, batting, and backing and quilted the background with a water-y pattern of variegated blue thread. I am very pleased with the final piece!

Friday Finish: Pink & Green Scrap Quilt

I finished quilting the pink and green scrap quilt that Lisa and I made together. I also ended up doing the binding because I had 3 days of online webinars this week so had a lot of hand-sewing time. 

I think it came out very well and as soon as the label is done (on Lisa's task list) we can give it to our friend for whom we made it.

This was my One Monthly Goal for June. 

Friday Finish - Dog Quilt

I finished the cheater quilt for the dog. It was a good opportunity to practice the "swirl meander" quilting pattern. 

The dog seems to like it.
 

Friday Finish - Baby Quilt

A.J.'s Baby Quilt Ready for Binding

I finished quilting the baby quilt that my friend Amanda made. She started from a panel and added some flying geese blocks and border strips to complete her design. It turned out really cute! For the quilting I used a variegated yellow/orange thread and did a medium-sized stipple over the whole center of the quilt. The borders got a pair of wavy lines to frame the quilt. I returned the quilted top to Amanda to add binding.

I finished quilting and binding my lavender geese quilt. This quilt was made from a jelly roll that I won in a drawing as part of Log Cabin Loonies back in 2018. I had made this exact same quilt from a coffee-themed jelly roll for my Mom and after she died that quilt came back to me. I have been using Mom's coffee quilt at the foot of my bed (for decoration and naps) and decided I wanted a spring/summer variation. I used flannel on the back, the same flannel I used on my purple scrappy Irish chain, and like how it turned out.

This quilt was on the list of finish goals that I set back in September.

OMG October Finish

 My #onemonthlygoal for October was to finish my blue string quilt which I did. This was finish #5/7 for my by-the-end of 2021 finishing goals. This was string-pieced on muslin foundations and came entirely from my scrap collection. It was originally going to be just blues with a little black and purple but I didn't think it had enough visual interest so I added the red squares to some of the blocks. A friend who saw it said it reminded her of Gee's Bend quilts which I didn't think about when I did it, but I think that was buried in my brain somewhere because this quilt is very reminiscent of some of those quilts. 

Blue String Quilt 2021

I started quilting this when I was at Quilt Retreat with my guild and one of my fellow guild members (a fabulous long-arm quilter) helped me decide on a quilting pattern. She suggested stars which I hadn't really done before, but they were pretty easy to do and they turned out really well on this quilt.

Finish #4 of 7

Flower Boxes Quilt

I am continuing to make progress on my goal of finishing 7 of my in-progress quilts by the end of the year. This quilt was made from a Moda jelly roll (Sew & Sew by Chloe's Closet) which I won as a door prize at a guild retreat a few years ago. I added the lavender fabric for the border but otherwise this is just the jelly roll. The pattern was super quick to put together, though as is often the case arranging the blocks in a way that I was happy with took longer than actually making the blocks. This quilt will be donated to my guild's charity quilt project. 

Finish #3 of 7

 My guild does a Mystery Quilt each year, and it is usually designed by one of our guild members who does a fabulous job creating beautiful quilts for us to make. Back in 2019 or so I decided that I needed to participate in this activity and assembled all the fabric I needed for the Mystery from my stash. I have finally finished that quilt. I quilted it with lots of circles, which looks good but took forever.

Finish #2 of 7

I set it as a goal to try and finish 7 in-progress quilts by the end of the year. This is the second one completed. I didn't do the lovely English-paper-piecing (EPP), someone in my Quilt Guild did, I was just charged with quilting it. It will be donated through the Guild's "A Quilted Gift" project.

I used an overall stipple pattern in neutral thread (I didn't want the quilting to overwhelm the piecing) and the same quilting in green thread to blend into the borders. I had never quilted EPP before and there was a bit of a learning curve to keeping it all flat and unpuckered as I went along.

Finish #1 of 7

 I set it as a goal to try and finish 7 in-progress quilts by the end of the year. I have completed the first one which is my house quilt. 

It was inspired by all the cute house blocks I was seeing on Instagram early in 2021 and is made entirely from my scrap baskets. (I am linking this up with O Scrap!)

 I dropped off several finished quilts for my Guild's charity quilt projects this morning. All were made from my stash. Two were scrap quilts and one used a charm pack I won as a door prize at a guild event. Picked up two quilt tops pieced by other guild members which I will be quilting in the coming months. OMG November Finish

Pinwheel Quilt - Done!

My #onemonthlygoal for November was to finish this pinwheel quilt my sister is gifting to a friend. It is quilted and bound and went in the mail yesterday.

The basic pattern came from a recent issue of American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine. I didn't like the border on the quilt in the magazine though so I used squares of some of the same scraps I made the pinwheels from and the white background fabric and created a sort of woven ribbon border. I like how it turned out. 

Sunny Christmas

Sunny Christmas - Done!

This quilt was on my 2017 UFO list and it finally got finished this week.  

It is the Sunny Lanes pattern from Nickel Quilts and is made entirely from scraps of Christmas fabric. The quilt is very big (it is the lap size according to the book). I quilted it on a friend's long-arm machine in a free-motion stipple pattern. I liked doing the free-motion on the long-arm, it went quick and it came out very well. The automatic stitch regulation function on the long-arm made my very uneven quilting look amazing and even. 

I had a plan for this quilt when I started it but my life is very different now than it was then and that plan no longer works. I am gifting the finished quilt to the son of a friend who needs some Christmas cheer in his life right now. 

OMG October Finish

 My #onemonthlygoal this month was to finish one of the scrappy baby quilts I had in progress. Mission accomplished! I used one of the machine quilting designs that I tried out earlier in the fall and was happy with how it came out. I should have made my lines farther apart though because this took way longer than it should have and didn't really need quite so much quilting. I will know better next time. This quilt was made totally from my stash, mostly scraps, so I am linking it up with Oh Scrap!

OMG August Finish

 

My #onemonthlygoal for August was to complete my black and white cotton skirt. All done! I have made this same pattern many times and yet somehow I managed to sew the waistband front in upside down. I may have spent as much time un-sewing as I did sewing on this project. 

Sunday Stitching Post #15

I spent this past week with my niece, much of it at the beach, so almost no sewing got done. (It was a great week though!) I managed to miss the deadline for posting my OMG finish for July. I did complete my goal several weeks ago which was to finish my bargello quilt. The UFO challenge project for July was my Guild Mystery Quilt which I got out, selected quilting thread for, and began quilting it. Not much progress, but some.
