A Dozen Two-Step Blocks

My scrappy sewing this week has been making two-step blocks for Cynthia's current block drive at QIMFTH. I went through my 5" square box and my scraps and found enough in fall colors to make a dozen blocks. 

I really like this block. It made up very easily and I like the woven look of the blocks set together. I may use this block in the future for a scrappy baby quilt. I think a bright multi-colored novelty print for the 5" squares and then scraps in related colors for the strips would be very cute.

It is grey and rainy here in New Hampshire today and my plan is to stay in my sewing room and make blue log cabin blocks for the RSC.

My Design for the Block

My nephew, William, asked me to make him a quilt for his bed in his favorite colors: brown, blue, yellow, green, and orange. There was to be absolutely NO red in it, and pink and purple should be very minimal and it would be better if they weren't there at all. This request was inspired by the scrappy purple quilt I was making for his sister, but the design of that quilt, Syncopated Ribbons, does not lend itself to 5 different colors. Especially not to 5 colors that contrast as strongly as these do.

I got out my graph paper and came up with a block design that would use scraps from my stash as much as possible. I had to buy a ton of brown fabric, but the swirling smoke design of this brown fabric is so beautiful I think it makes the whole thing. The blue and green fabrics are each in the quilt just once, in one long strip and 3 squares. The yellows and oranges are repeated a couple of times as I had fewer options in my stash in these colors.

Overall I am happy with how the design is turning out. I used post-it notes to make sure all the blocks were turned the correct direction and that the order my husband helped me arrange (with no matching fabrics next to each other) was how the blocks ended up. I have a fabulous fabric for the backing (which is a surprise so no pictures until the project is all done and given to William) and will machine quilt this twin-bed sized quilt in 3 vertical sections.
