Scrappy Saturday

Log cabin blocks in progress
I have not done a lot of sewing this month, but I did do some work on orange scraps for the RSC. I cut a bunch of scraps from my orange basket into usable shapes and finished my orange heart block. I am almost done with the 6 orange log cabin blocks I have been making with each month's color.

Scrappy Saturday

Heart block and alternate
July turned out to be a whirlwind (some good, some bad, ultimately all ok) and very little sewing got done. I did manage to sew teal log cabin blocks (though I forgot to take a picture of the finished blocks before I put them away) and to make my blocks for the rainbow heart quilt.

Log Cabins in Progress
The RSC color for August is orange which I am excited about as it is a favorite.

By the end of this week I hope to have a scrappy quilt finish.

Scrappy Saturday

Log Cabin Blocks - Blue
I finished my blue RSC log cabin blocks for June last weekend. I didn't do any scrappy sewing this past week as I have been focusing on quilting some tops that I want to get finished up this summer.

The RSC color for July is aqua so it may be time to do another set of pickle-dish blocks as I think aqua will go well with the red and purple I already made.

Scrappy Saturday

The blocks for the pink and green quilt are done and my co-conspirator is sewing them together (the top will come back to me for quilting).

I sorted out pink scraps and have begun working on my 6 pink log cabin blocks for the month. They are coming along well so far.

Scrappy Saturday

I finished the top for the Green Scrap Quilt and am very pleased with how it came out.  I ended up making a dozen blocks and will add a single-fabric border to "frame" everything. I will post a picture when I get the borders on.

An additional benefit of the January RSC is that my greens bin is now very nicely sorted and folded. If I can get that done with every month's color that will be wonderful.

...became log cabin blocks
I have started working on reds by completing six log-cabin blocks.

Lots of red 1" strips...

I have also decided to do a pickle-dish wall hanging as part of the RSC this year. I was inspired by the pickle-dish quilt I saw at Quilts, etc.  which uses colored bits and white in the wedges and then a black background. I found a pattern for the block, printed off the paper-piecing templates, and bought a very nice black tone-on-tone for the background. My plan is to make 4 blocks in each of 3 colors during the year (starting with red and using whatever other 2 inspire me). The finished and arranged pickle-dish blocks that Karen made for her quilt are pictured in a post on progress on several quilts. My pattern is smaller than what she did, but will be a good opportunity for me to make a block I have been wanting to try for years.

Sunday Stitching Post #14

I did a lot of sewing this week, but it was pretty much all making masks to be sold through a local brewery as a fundraiser for the NH Hospitality Employee Relief Fund. I made 24 masks this week and that might be the end of this project.

Today's plan is to stay in the AC and sew (there is a heat advisory in NH right now). I'm not sure what I will work on next. July is fast disappearing and I haven't done anything on my UFO challenge project for the month so that might be a good place to go next.

While I was sewing I was listening to a great podcast that I recently discovered: What Should I Read Next.

There is a cool set for log cabin blocks today at Quilting is More Fun than Housework. I could see doing a log cabin with the circle set in the middle and the wiggly set surrounding it (check out the picture on QiMFtH and this will make sense). I will play with this idea next time I have a batch of log cabin blocks.

OMG January 2020 Finish

72 log cabin blocks (some in a pile)
I completed my #onemonthlygoal for January. I finished the 72 blocks I wanted to make and got a good start on the final 72 I will need to make the quilt. I'm linking up with One Monthly Goal.

OMG January 2020

My one-monthly-goal for this month is to make 72 mini log cabin blocks for a quilt I want to have done in April. The plan is to make a lapquilt from 4" (finished size) log cabin blocks and I will need a total of 168. I have 30 made so if I made 72 this month and 72 next month I will be ready to assemble and quilt in March.

Log Cabin Update

I finished some more log cabin blocks this week, for a grand total of 108 blocks, and have begun sewing them all together into a top. I took some pictures of layout options and put them on instagram over the weekend.
A local quilt guild donates wheel-chair-sized quilts (inspired by the "lovie lap quilt") to nursing homes and that is what I am going to make with these bright and cheerful blocks. The target size is 32x39 (though a friend in the guild said some of them are 36" wide by as much as 48" long). My original layout was  9 blocks by 12 blocks (the whole 108) but I am going to shorten it to 10 blocks long for a finished size of 36x40. If I can find some nice flannel in my stash I will use that for backing.

Log Cabin Update

I finished 12 more blocks this week!

I finished a lot last week, so I am now at a total of 60 finished blocks.

Log Cabin Update

I have finished 24 log cabin blocks since my last LC update which brings me to a total of 48 done. I have the centers sewed to white squares for 48 more. This week's picture is the most likely set for my quilt as I love how log cabin blocks look set in the barn raising pattern. I did not arrange these blocks very well for the picture as all the yellow is in clumps. Will need to be careful about that when it comes time to arrange the quilt top.

Log Cabin Update

I have finished a dozen more little log cabin blocks this week.
12 little log cabin blocks finished this week
I did some organizing of my strips, making them into piles of 6 and pinning them so I can chop off a stack of pieces in the length I need for the next round in the blocks and that has sped up the process a bit. I have not been cutting the logs exactly to length as I go along but have sewed the pieces on and then cut off the excess from each block with shears before I finger press the piece toward the outside. This has worked fine as my blocks have come out the size they are supposed to and it saved me a lot of advance cutting which I find really tedious. I haven't decided yet what I am going to do with these blocks (or, therefor how many I need to make) but plan to try out different arrangements for each progress picture and see what appeals to me as a setting.

I am linking up this week with Log Cabin Loonies and Oh Scrap! I am going to try to do log cabin updates on Thursdays, but didn't get on track for that this week.

Log Cabin Loonies

My basket of 1" strips ready to sew
I was reading Quilting is More Fun than Housework (which is a great name for a blog!) late last week and came across a project called Log Cabin Loonies hosted on JulieKQuilts. There was a post back in August about making little log cabin blocks from strings and I was totally inspired!
I have a HUGE bag of strips/scraps that I have been saving to make string quilts from. I have made a couple string quilts in recent years but the bag is so full you can't even tell I have used any of them. This weekend I pressed a bunch of the scraps and cut 1" strips out of them (in white/cream and in colors that I thought looked good together) and put them in a pretty basket.

I decided to use bright pink for all my centers and cut a bunch of squares from a few different pinks from the scrap bag. I made a test block (as JulieK recommends) which was an excellent thing because when it was made I didn't like the way the 1.5" center square looked in my block. I made a second test block with a 1" center square and liked it much better. I have made 6 little log cabins so far and have materials prepped and ready to sew for lots more.
